Recruiting and Preparing Individuals for an Alternative Educator License in Special Education

Requirements for admission to the Transition to Teaching program:
  • A strong interest in teaching children with special needs in grades K-12
  • Bachelor's degree in any field other than education
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or acceptable GRE or MAT scores
  • Acceptance to the University of Dayton graduate school
  • Passing scores on all three sections of the Praxis I Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)
  • Acceptable recent background check from both the BCI and FBI
  • Negative Tuberculosis test
  • Acceptance by the selected school district (Interview required)
  • Agreement to serve for three years in the selected school district
  • Agreement to pursue a Provisional Educator License


Requirements for an Alternative Educator License for Intervention Specialists: Mild/Moderate, K-12 (Issued after successful completion of TTT program):

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Passing scores on the Praxis I skills test
  • Acceptable background check via BCI and FBI
  • Negative Tuberculosis test
  • Completion of 30 semester hours in the principles and practices of teaching exceptional children
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 in the content area of special education
  • Major in Special Education or completion of equivalent credit hours
  • Agreement to participate in a structured mentoring program provided by the employing school district
  • Request for issue of license from the superintendent of the employing district



Requirements for the Provisional Educator License:
  • Completion of two years of teaching under the Alternative Educator License
  • Completion of additional 12 semester hours of college coursework (with a GPA of 2.5 or higher) in the principles and practices of teaching, student development and learning, pupil assessment procedures, curriculum development, classroom management, and teaching methodology
  • Passing score on the Praxis II Teacher License and Certification Exam Special Education content area test
  • Passing score on Praxis II Teacher License and Certification Exam Principles of Learning and Teaching test
  • Request for issuance of license from the Superintendent of employing school district



Requirements for the Professional Educator License:
  • Completion of a structured mentoring program provided by the employing school district that is congruent with the performance assessment required for entry-year teachers
  • Passing score on performance-based assessment (Praxis III)
  • Request for issuance of license from the Superintendent of employing school district
