PROGRAM UPDATE #2

The
Transition to Teaching program is a grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Participants will be provided assistance with the costs of tuition for the 30 credit hours of coursework required to obtain Ohio's Alternative Educator License in Special Education. Approximately 3/4 of the costs of tuition will be provided by the Transition to Teaching project. Participants will assume the remaining cost of tuition to a maximum of $3,000. This amount is paid on a per credit hour basis. The full amount is not required in advance.

The 30 credit hours of coursework outlined for the program will be taught over 12-16 months. The program uses a cohort design in which a selected group of participants progress through the program together by taking courses online and attending some face-to-face instruction sessions at the same time and location.

Upon successful completion of the program, participants will be eligible to obtain Ohio's Alternative Educator License as a Mild/Moderate Intervention Specialist for grades K - 12 and will be assigned to and employed by the represented school districts during the 2012/2013 school year. The U.S. Department of Education requires that those who have accepted financial incentives as part of the program are required to a full-time special education position for three years in the district teach in they were selected and initially hired. Therefore, selected participants are required to sign a three-year service agreement with the employing school district when the program begins.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Transition to Teaching project is to recruit and prepare eligible and qualified individuals as Intervention Specialists for teaching students with Mild/Moderate Special Education needs in grades K-12 at high-need, high-poverty school districts in Ohio.

The Transition to Teaching program is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Education, Ohio Department of Education, School Study Council of Ohio, The University of Dayton, and selected qualifying school districts in Ohio.
