Questions and Answers

Q: Who is eligible to attend the Martin W. Essex School for the Gifted?
A: Gifted, Ohio eleventh-grade students entering their senior year of high school who demonstrate high levels of potential leadership, intellectual curiosity, academic and/or artistic ability, and commitment to social responsibility.

Q: How do I apply?
A: Speak with your principal or coordinator of gifted education to obtain an application. Applications are also available for download on the Essex School web site or the Gifted Education page of the Ohio Department of Education web site. Submit the application to your superintendent. The superintendent is authorized to forward one application for each 10,000 ADM, or fraction thereof, in a school district’s jurisdiction.

Q: When is the deadline for applying?
A: Each year, applications are due to the Essex School during the month of February. The specific date will be posted on the Current School Information web page.

Q: How are the Essex students selected?
A: As a part of the application process, potential Essex scholars who have been nominated by their superintendent complete a 500-word essay in addition to having two teacher recommendations based on the student’s scholarship, leadership, and social responsibility. Selection committee members evaluate each student’s essay and teacher recommendations separately. They search for exceptional and exciting responses from the essays as well as strong recommendations from teachers.

Q: When is the Essex School?
A: The Essex School is held annually during the month of June. Specific dates will be posted on the Current School Information web page.

Q: Where is the Essex School held?
A: The Essex School is held on the campus of The Ohio State University, in Columbus. Students live in a dormitory on The Ohio State University campus and benefit from the wide range of resources for learning that are available on-site as well as in the city of Columbus. In addition, dormitory counselors, security, and medical services will be provided.

Q: What is the cost to attend the Essex School?
A: The cost of tuition, room and board, field trips, and other activities planned for the Essex School are provided by the State of Ohio and the Ohio Department of Education. The only expense to the student is transportation to and from the program and any additional spending money the student may desire.

Q: What about meals?
A: Meals will be provided in dining halls or from restaurants in Columbus.

Q: Can I drive to The Ohio State University campus?
A: No. Automobiles, bicycles, motorcycles and other kinds of vehicles are prohibited. Students are not permitted to ride in vehicles, except when accompanied by a member of the School staff.

Q: What are the rules and regulations of the School?
A: They are a combination from both The Essex School and The Ohio State University. All students must adhere to the rules and regulations as prescribed and disseminated to them.
