This fund, established in 2005, is in honor of the outstanding contributions to education by Dr. Walter B. Barbe. Being a renowned authority in the fields of reading and learning disabilities, Dr. Barbe has had a remarkable career as an author, lecturer, editor and professor at both Kent State and The Ohio State University. For twenty-five years he served as editor-in-chief of the widely acclaimed Highlights for Children magazine. Furthermore, Dr. Barbe is a fellow of the American Psychological Assoication and listed in Who's Who in America and American Men of Science.

    Purpose   The School Study Council of Ohio announces the availability of funding through the Walter B. Barbe Small Grants Program, designed to provide grants to K-12 English Language Arts teachers in SSCO member districts. These grants are intended to provide classroom teachers with the opportunity to supplement their existing English Language Arts program with the implementation of an activity designed to improve the quality of instruction in their classrooms.
       
    Eligibility K - 12 English Language Arts teachers in SSCO member districts
       
    Funding SSCO will award up to 5 grants of $300
       
    Applications Available June 2008
         
    Submission Date October 9, 2008  
         
    Decisions Announced Decisions will be announced in early November.
         
    SELECTION CRITERIA
    Applications are limited to four (4) pages. The application cover sheet (form) does not count against the total allowable pages. Applications should be formatted to follow the order prescribed below:

  Description of project Describe the purpose of your request, including the products or best practices to be supported by the funding provided. 
     What research supports your proposed program? 
     What is
innovative about your proposed project? 
     Describe how the project will support and supplement the existing curriculum. 
     How will this grant allow you to improve the quality of instruction for your students?
       
3.
  Need for the project Why is this project needed?
       
4.
  Budget Provide a brief description and a budget for how funds will be used. Grants are intended for classroom use only.
       
5.
  Reporting At the end of the school year, awardees are responsible for submitting a one-page report on how funds were expended for use in the classroom. SSCO will ask that any products or lesson plans developed with grant funding be shared with other SSCO member districts. Awardees will be provided a form to complete this activity.
       
      Applications are limited to four (4) pages. Submissions are acceptable by email or U.S. mail. Please do not fax your proposal. Applications that do not address all of the selection criteria or cover sheet requirements will not be reviewed.
